Long monumental hike (like Carl getting his eyesight back)!

January 7th, 2008

Latest email from Paul:  They went shopping on Saturday and Sunday they went on a long hike:

We went to see a monument that looks like the Washington monument on a small mountain top about 2 miles from the hospital.  We had to walk around to the back side of the hill to get to the steps so it is probably 6 or 7 miles round trip.  There are 728 steps going up the hill.  Carl  didn’t complain a bit but we had to make several rest stops on the way up.  On the way back, we stopped to get some lunch at a place called UBC coffee house.  I thought it would be a simple cafe but when we got inside it looked very high class.  I ordered a dish called crispy pigeon.  It sounded good at the time but what I got was not crispy, not even warm and I don’t think it was pigeon.  It was like a half of a small chicken that had been boiled and chopped up (bones included).  It was not edible.  Carl got the fried cod dinner which consisted of some kind of fish steaks that instead of being filleted it was sliced through the center of the fish and pan fried with the bones in.   We got some fried spring rolls that were some kind of sweet purple stuff wrapped around some green paste stuff and dipped in some light crispy batter then fried.  Of course it was served with ketchup.  Carl said “this sux”.  Carl did get what I think was vegetable soup with his meal that was good and a glass of white wine that tasted like a good grade of gasoline.  We ended up spending about $30 US.  We have decided not to complain anymore about the greasy chinese food that we get delivered to the hospital.  It is reasonably good, about $4 and feeds us both for 2 meals with food left over.

    Hello Carl and Paul,
It sounds to me like you are getting the same kind of yummy food that Charles and I are being fed here in this nursing home. I am trying to make the best of it, however. I am thinking that I will only be here for a few more weeks and then I will go right back to the hospital for more knee surgery. Just like you though, I have a lot of people praying for me and I have faith that the Lord is with both of us and that everything will turn out alright.

You forgot to tell us what was at the top of all those steps. You must have been exhausted by the time you got back to the hospital. I climbed that many steps one time when I was in my thirties at Watkins Glen, NY. I can remember how exhausting that was without even having to walk a few miles to get there and back. You must really be in good shape.

I have so enjoyed reading your blogs. Every day I can’t wait to get my computer out to see if there is another one. I also received two emails from Vickie thanking me for my comment and keeping me abreast of your situation. I am thrilled about the changes happening in your eyes and hope that one day soon they will turn into some glorious eyesight. Somehow, I just know it is going to happen for you.

    Take care and God Bless.
    Your new friend in Christ,
    Eileen Carney

We are glad to hear you are having great adventures while you are in China – We continue to pray for miracles. The kids in Children’s church are offering up special prayers every week for you. Tara is wondering if Carl will be speaking Chinese by the time he gets back. We are sure you will have lots of stories to tell when you get back. We are having tornado warnings here in Southwest Missouri. It sounds like there is going to be a lot of clean up on Tuesday.
Keep the faith – We serve a big God!

    Dale, Shirley & Kim
