The final week

June 9th, 2008

It was a quiet weekend. James was off so Doug was unable to get acupuncture but was able to do all of the other therapies.

We were advised on Saturday not to plan any big outings for Sunday as they were expecting heavy rains. We were told that they shot CO2 into the air to make it rain. True or not, I don’t know!!!! We did wake up to rain Sunday morning but only light rain. I did get brave enough to take Doug to the farmers market so he now has a feel for the true Chinese way of life. We learned today that the Chinese food we have been ordering in is coming from there……somethings you are better off not knowing.

Doug has been able to stand on his own for a short period of time and this morning he was able get to a standing position from sitting on the edge of the bed with no assistance. He is pushing himself to the limit, he wants this so badly. The doctors keep reminding him he has been sick for a long time and not to be so impatient……that goes in one ear and out the other. Doug will get his final Lumbar puncture on Wednesday and the final IV injection on Friday.

The skies did open up over night and it has rained all day today. So we did not get out at all today.

There is little boy here from Australia named Cody who has really taken to Doug. Cody has a form of MS they have not given a name yet as they believe his myelin quit growing at age 2. He is so sweet but has limited control of his limbs, head and speech. He and Doug are good therapy for each other.

p6080190.JPG  Yesterday was Dragon Boat festival in China. It is celebrated to commemorate Qu Yuan, a poet who drowned for his country. Zonzi is eaten in his honour and the hospital gave each of us one. It is a sticky rice with either pork or a sweet bean custard in it wrapped in bamboo leaves. I enjoyed it but Doug is a little fussier than I am.

Dear D & D, Thankyou for all the daily reports and pictures. We are so interested in your treatments, personal contacts, experiences and well being. I was talking to my Brother, Tom, on the phone this a.m. and his queries were of you, too. He is not ‘computerized’, so does not have the daily reports.
We finally got a little drizzle of rain in our area, but no WARM weather.
We plan to go to visit our daughter, Melonee, her hubby Michael, son Joshua, & daughter Emma in Calgary on the weekend. If all goes well, we will continue on to points in B.C.[ I am concerned about the health of our cousin Bill Perry and want to be by him if he needs me. His bother, Dr.Allan is coming from Fort Wayne, Indianna as soon as he can make arrangements.] Love & blessings from, Marg & Les

Good Morning. What great news to hear that you are getting stronger every day. Patience is something we all could use when we want something to happen right now. We had rain on the weekend but I spoke to your Mom yesterday and Estevan had not received any as yet. Hopefully the skies opened up last night. Entered another golf tournament on the weekend – Ken and I – the office was short two players so I stepped up – I was quite proud of my drives but definitely will need that lesson this Friday on chipping and putting – there is a lot to this golf game. Take care – keep up the hard work. Thanks again for the great blogs and pictures Darlene. You have no idea how much everyone looks forward to them – it’s the first thing we do in the morning – either Ken or I are downstairs checking the computer. luv you both. Auntie B.

I am so glad to hear Doug is getting stronger!! Don’t worry about the Chinese food coming from the market. I have eaten plenty of food from places like that and have found that it’s some of the best food anywhere (I think Mom, Dad, Lance, and Kelly would agree). I think it’s good to be able to see your food right from the time it is able to move on it’s own to being put on your plate! I look foward to seeing you in Estevan in a few weeks.
