Today is Michael’s birthday so myself and Grace have been singing Happy Birthday to Daddy all day, the rest of the ward must think we’re insane. Anyway Happy Birthday Michael.
It’s all very quiet here as Grace was anesthetized at 2.30pm for her spinal and is still sleeping peacefully 5hrs later. It’s taken a lot of the stress out of keeping her lying flat for 6hrs but i will be kept up all night by a very hungry and wide awake little girl tonight.
The day started off as a bit of a drama but has steadily got better and will i’m sure deteriorate as the early hours approach. At 8am Grace had the numbing cream on each of her hands and the point on her spine, (i’m not a fan of the cream but thats a discussion for another day) at 11 o’clock there is still no sign of anybody coming to but her canula in or making arrangements for her spinal. A little while later we find out Grace has been put back to this afternoon and wont be seen till 2.30pm. At this point i’m feeling very sorry for Grace as i’d starved her in preparation for her spinal, 2 jam butties and a big gulp of apple juice later and i think she forgave me.
The whole process here is very different from last time and again has plus and minus points. Here unless you are a high risk case they conduct your spinal in your bedroom, after sterilising the room with a big light before hand. This has the benefit for the parent of not seeing your child rolled into a strange room with wooshy star trek doors but has the nagging thought of it just being done in a bedroom. In Grace’s case they got the head man from paediatrics up to do her anaesthetic and the head of stem cells to do the spinal, 2 ward doctors and 3 nurses, she was in good hands and there wasn’t a word from her. Last time she had spinals in Hangzhou she was only sedated for the spinal and the 6hrs after were frought with keeping her amused, here the doctor said she could wake up from 4 hrs but even that is a big help.
Tomorrow is back to her rehabilitation routine but how successful it is will depend on how she sleeps tonight. Hopefully todays rain will of lifted and we can have a little walk. We’ve been stuck in for the last 2 days and fresh air, or polluted air, is needed.
I’ll go know and see if Michaels picked up his birthday present, being the loving wife i am i said he could have a trailer for his birthday and then left him to pay and pick it up himself!

Hi there,
was the light a UV light? next time they use it make sure you do not wear white undies or you might get a shock!, you could always tell Grace she has been included in a “Life on Mars / Ashes to Ashes scenario but in her case she has ended up in a ropey late 1980′s disco and at some point she will wake up in rainey, cold, Wales, hold on, better not scare her. I must appologise, I made myself a promise to put something on here every day and fell at the first hurdle. I have written myself a not not to let it happen again which means of course that it will. Anyway, drivel over. Good to hear it is all going according to plane and I will write again soon.

You are both doing so well. It certainly sounds like boot camp but you know how to make the most of it. I hope Grace recovered well from the spinal, it must be sore but she is so brave.

We are all moved now and the house is a state. The phone might be connected today and then the internet might be up and running Friday or Monday. Whenever it is working I’ll call and hopefully get to see you both.

Hope this works today as I tried twice yesterday andwe were having a blip, either the computer or me, not sure which one of us was having a’senior moment’. Anyway I have just tried to ring you but there is no reply so you are obviously busy, or sleeping if Grace was awake all night! not to worry, I will try again tomorrow.
I hope that Grace didn’t have you awake half the night after her sedative, but I expect that having the treatment in her own bedroom and with you around is a lot more comforting for her than being in a strange room with with other people and her being sedated like this is a trade off between having her still and quiet just after the treatment or awake and difficult to keep still. The main thing is that she isn’t in too much discomfort with the procedure and the sedative will help with that.
Ged is in Hamburg at the moment, he went yesterday, the job will last about two weeks he thinks but luckily he is flying back to Toulouse for the weekend so I can still visit this weekend.

Other than that I havn’t any other news at the moment as it’s the normal routine of work and bed for the next few days.
