March 11th, 2010
We first arrived in Shanghai on Sunday more than a week ago. We stayed at a hotel and saw lots of fireworks. The next morning we flew for about an hour to Qingdao. We arrived at The People’s Hospital of Chengyang, Qingdao and were shown to our room. We were then given a tour of the VIP hospital ward. We were shown the kitchen, dining room, toy section and common area where all the patients and their families sit, chat and play.
We had Macca’s for lunch, which they delivered to the hospital. There are four translators that help us talk to the doctors and therapists, but the doctors and therapists can speak a little bit of English. My therapist gives me accupuncture, accupressure and electric wave therapy five days a week. My therapist is funny because when he puts the needles in for accupuncture and I say “ouch”, he says “ouch” too! My mum pretends I’m a birthday cake with eleven candles sticking out of me (but they’re really accupuncture needles) and she always likes to come over and blow them out and then she gives me a kiss!

Hello Moanna,
I’ve been thinking of you and Leilani all week. I was hoping there aren’t too many needles. You are very brave. I get accupuncture sometimes and some needles hurt more than others. I hope you get to leave the hospital for visits outside, and that you are enjoying the Chinese food. Although Maccas doesn’t sound terribly Chinese.
Looking forward to hearing/reading more of your aventures soon.

What!
Maccas for lunch when visiting China! That is like going to Maccas and having a bowl of vegetables!
China sounds like a real adventure. I look foward to hearing about some of the fascinatinig sights, sounds and smells of China and not just food either.

Hi Moanna!
I have been thinking about you and Leilani too. How brave you are to have so many needles in you 5 days a week! That’s pretty amazing. Your doctor and the hospital sound like they are taking good care of you. I hope you’re still singing with your beautiful voice. I miss hearing it in the staffroom!
Looking forward to your next update,
Miss Hook

Dear Moana,
So does maccas in China taste any different from maccas in Castle Hill???
What a brave girl you are….I am trying to imagine you as a birthday cake with 11 candles…but I think you are much sweeter than any birthday cake!!
Leilani must see how brave you are because I read that she is brave too (she must take after her big sister!!!).
Looking forward to learning lots about China from you,
Love Mrs Muscat XXX

Hi Moana.
It was great to hear from you. All of us in 1/2T have been thinking about you and wondering what you have been doing in China. I showed all the 1/2T boys and girls the Channel 7 news item that showed you and Leilani packing for your China trip. We watched it twice!
We have been learning more about celebrations, especially St Patrick’s Day and Harmony Day. We even had a visit from a naughty leprechaun who made mischief in our classroom, overturning the chairs, scattering books and pencils over the floor, and moving the furniture around. Luckily, the naughty leprechaun didn’t seem to find the 1/2T treasure! We are trying to catch him though.
We hope that you are having some wonderful experiences in China (not the needles though) and we are all looking forward to hearing about them when you return.
Best wishes from all of us in 1/2T
Sue Taylor.

Hi Moana,
Things are going okay at school. Everybody is missing you lots especially me and Lachlan.
We have had a maths test to put us into maths groups – I am hoping I am in your group.
A leprechaun came to our classroom for St Patricks Day and left us chocolate money.
Is it snowing in China or is it hot?
Today we played pin the tail on the donkey and there were 4 winners – it was fun. See you soon Moana. From Emily

Hi Moana,
I’m glad you all got there safely. We miss you guys.
Lucky there’s a toy section for you guys to play.
Have you made some new friends yet? I hope that even tho it’s all important stuff and you need to be brave that you’re still having fun.
Love you and miss you,
Jodi
