After Spinal Injection

Well, as stated before, Nicholas did well with spinal injection, just got frustrated at having to lie on his back for such a long time.  The next day he went to physical therapy, but while working out very  hard he began to get a headache.  Physical therapy was called off, but he continued to received electric wave therapy and acupuncture.  He is feeling much better now.  We participated in Chinese Lantern Festival with staff on floor last night.  We ate sweet dumplings and fruit. Apparently the round dumplings signify the family being around together and eating the dumplings brings good luck for the new year. Reminded us of our New Year’s celebration and eating of black-eyed peas, pork and greens for good luck, good health and prosperity. Oh the fireworks were something else and we had the perfect view from our room.  I don’t think we will ever again be satisfied with our traditional fireworks! ha

Great news……..during physical therapy Nicholas was able to lift his foot, which he could not do before coming to China.

Nicholas is scheduled to receive another spinal injection on Monday (2-25-08) and an IV injection on Friday (2-29-08)………..

Will keep all of you posted

History

This post is out of order, but we realized that we had not given a post of Nicholas’ background……..

In 2002 at the age of 19, Nicholas’ very active athletic life came to a screeching halt as he experienced an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) hemmorage (spinal stroke) at the T-12 level. He received treatment via UAB (University of Alabama Birmingham) Medical Center and Stanford Medical Center in California.  The treatment in California eventually eliminated the AVM via a procedure called “Cyberknife”, but the blood on Nicholas’ spinal cord and spinal cord swelling left Nicholas paralyzed from the waist down for about 7 months where his mobility was confined to the use of a wheelchair for 9 months.  He evendually got feeling down to his ankles and began walking with the use of AFO’s (braces) and a cane; however, his feet remained paralyzed. Nicholas participated in various rehab programs exhausting any other treatment available in the USA.  Nicholas discovered the treatment available via Beike Bio-Technology Co. via a coworker. This coworker knew of an individual who had received umbilical cord stem cells treatment after an accident which resulted in a spinal cord injury and this individual received very signigicant improvement……..miraculous results!  Now Nicholas is in the process of receiving his miraculous results as he receives umbilical cord stem cells transplants via Beike Bio-Technology Co. at the location of Qingdao Chengyang People’s Hospital Stem Cell Treatment Center.  What a shame this has to be done half way around the world and not in our own country, USA. We are most thankful that at least there is this treatment.

Treatment Begins!

Sorry about delays in posts…….computer problems on this end.  After exams in different areas, Nicholas began physical therapy, electric wave therapy, accupuncture and he had his First Spinal Stem Cells Injection today (Wed) 2/20/08.  All went well and he is currently still lying on his back.  He will continue on his back for a total of 6 hours.  Our expectations for complete success continue to be very high as things look good.  You can all be assured that with this excellent staff of highly skilled caring individuals, Nicholas is in good hands.  We can’t say enough good things about all with whom we have come in contact  here at Qingdao Chengyang People’s Hospital Stem Cell Treatment Center.  Thank you all for your inspiring comments……..we have read them all and appreciate all of you.  I will keep you posted.

Hello From China,
We made the trip fine;however, it was a very long and hard trip. Wendy and Sid were waiting at the airport for us. Were we ever glad to see them and get to our room and beds! We left Navarre on the 2/12/08 for Atlanta then flew out of Atlanta on 2/13/08 for Chicago then on to Korea then on to China where we arrived Friday night (2/15/08). Saturday morning Nicholas was examined by two doctors and had some tests. Wendy took us on tour of hospital, went to Bank of China to exchange currency then on to the market for grocery shopping. The nurses and all the staff here are so very helpful and kind. Nicholas will get his schedule in the next day or two with when 1st stem cell injection also wil get schedule from therapists about his whole routine (physical therapy, etc). Today (Sunday) we just got some much needed rest as we ordered Chicken & rice with Chinese veggies which was delivered right to our door. It was delicious! The cost was great, too! The meal would easily feed 4 and cost 10 RMB’s (Chinese currency) which is about $1.38 USD. We’re watching movies the rest of day as Nicholas gets ready for busy week ahead of him. Thanks for the posts. We will continue to keep all of you updated as to Nicholas’ miracle in the making!
